Italian London

This tour in historic Clerkenwell is for everyone with an interest in Italy and is suitable for all ages.

Your Italian guide, Deborah, who grew up in London's Italian community, will tell you about the history of the community, give you a tour of the historic streets and take you to the secret Italian church and social club that are at the heart of London's Italian community.

You can join this tour midweek for a 3-course lunch, or on a Sunday for antipasti, pastries and coffee.

History of Italians in London

Italians first arrived in London in the 19th century. First came poor unskilled workers from rural southern Italy. These Italians were very popular as they brought the first ice-cream to London.

Later highly skilled glass workers came & worked in the near by growing optical & diamond industries.

Back Hill, the old Italian quarter in this corner of Clerkenwell was poor and extremely overcrowded. 'The Hill' had a reputation for serious crime.

Very few Italians live in the area now but Clerkenwell is still a hub for Italians in London, thanks to the church.
